Mural in Oaxaca
January 21st, 2014
A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to get to paint a wall in Oaxaca. I did it in collaboration with my friend Vlocke (Vlocke Urban Art on facebook). The image I chose to paint is a little homage to all things weird in New England. It includes the skull of Phineas Gage (now residing in a Harvard U. museum), the frog from the Frog Bridge in Connecticut, the albino squirrel from Jamaica Pond in Jamaica Plain, MA, bigfoots, eggheads, jackalopes, aliens, and the Whale’s Tails in Burlington, Vermont.
If you happen to be in Oaxaca and want to check it out, it’s on the Panoramica del Fortin, en el Centro.
Sully the Cat (Portrait)
December 22nd, 2013
A few weeks ago, I was contacted by a lovely client on the website CustomMade. She had a cat who had recently passed away and she wanted to memorialize him for her boyfriend. Luckily, I was able to help her realize her vision. Here’s the result!
“Sophy was great to work with — she gave me samples and ideas to choose from which helped guide the process toward the perfect end result. I am thrilled with the finished drawing, and would highly recommend Sophy to others!” -Emily

Mictecacihuatl – Dia de Los Muertos
October 31st, 2013
This is Mictecacihuatl, the Aztec Queen of the Dead, just in time for Dia de Los Muertos.
Zanate
October 8th, 2013
Today I drew a Zanate at the request of a friend. The Zanate (or Quiscal) is a kind of crow they have down here in Mexico. It’s smaller and sleeker than our Corvus brachyrhynchos.
Oaxaca
October 8th, 2013
I’m back in Oaxaca for the next few months! I’m so happy to be back here and working on my Mexican mythology series. This collection on work will be drawings, paintings, and (hopefully) sculptures that depict my interpretations of some of the classic Mexican folk tales. I’ve been reading The Hero with A Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell and trying to relate these stories to his ideas on archetypes and the hero’s journey. Here is the first finished drawing…
This is Princess Iztaccihuatl. She and her lover Popocatepetl died in a tragic situation similar to Tristan and Isolde. The gods took pity on them and turned them into Mexico’s biggest volcanoes. Occasionally when Popo thinks of Izta, he spews a thick cloud of ash.
More Dog Drawings
August 9th, 2013
Did I mention I love doing dog portraits? This is my roommate Maia’s little pup. Tiny and adorable.
Foxed
August 9th, 2013
I just got back from my artist’s residency in Oaxaca, Mexico, which is why there’s been such a gap in my posts. More on that later. For now, here’s a quick little fox drawing I did for ANE Whole Terrain.
Progress Shots of Dog Portrait
April 8th, 2013
I recently completed a dog portrait for a friend of her little pup, Charlie. I took photos while I was working on it so I could show it coming together. I love seeing this when other artists do it, so I thought I would share my own… I used Arches watercolor paper for this, as well as some good old Micron and prismacolor pens.
