I took a trip to Boston

July 27th, 2009

This weekend, I took a 10 hour overnight train ride from Baltimore to Boston, and then back again. It was complete with drunk soccer fans from the one Chelsea game ever to occur in the US, screaming children, and a dining car that closed before 10. Needless the say the actual travelling was not a good time.

Once I got there, however, I got to see my best friend from my childhood get married, go to my college room mate’s graduation party, and see my parents for the first time in 6 months. So, all in all, I think it was worth the 20 hours of agony.

On the trip back, in between working on freelance projects and catching up on back issues of Scientific American from my dad, I managed to do this little sketch of myself from the reflection in the window. Looking forward to doing it all again in a few weeks…

Towson Arts Collective Fall Illustration Show

June 23rd, 2009

I just got word that 2 of my pieces were accepted into the Towson ARTS Collective Illustration show. Thanks so much to Diane, the coordinator of the event, and the two jurors, Warren Lin and James Warhola!

The show will be up from September 3 to October 23rd in the gallery at 406 York Road in Towson, MD. The reception is on Friday September 11th, from 5:30 to 7:30 and you are cordially invited, so mark it down!

The two pieces that were accepted are “King Kong” and “Animal Farm”. You can see them on my website, under 3D illustration. They will be for sale and part of the proceeds go towards supporting the Towson ARTS Collective.

It should be an awesome show since there are so many talented artists in the area, and I can’t wait to meet everyone! More info when I have it…

New 3D Illustration!

March 28th, 2009

I finally finished it! This is a piece I started when I got laid off from my previous job and was considering a career change at 22. I decided to stick with illustration a while longer and make this, and I’m glad I did. You can see this image and all my other 3d illustrations here.

Artist for Hire!

January 27th, 2009

Do you need a last minute valentine’s day gift? birthday present? a little something for yourself? I’m offering my services as an artist for any ideas you might have. I can do caricatures:

pet portraits (real or imaginary!)

or more realistic portraits:

I’m open to pretty much anything, if you have an idea, email me and let me know! I can give you pricing info and a time frame. For caricatures, I would charge about $25, for other things, email me and I can give you a more accurate price guide. Thanks!

What do platypi and underwear have in common?

January 19th, 2009

A couple of fellow artists and I are going to start selling handmade underwear (men’s only to start) on Etsy. They’ll be embroidered with our own illustrations. Intrigued? Have a suggestion? Let me know! The site will be up shortly and I will post developments here as they happen…

Here’s a sneak peak of one of the illustrations that will most likely get embroidered…

Unemployed! (Thanks George Bush)

January 18th, 2009

I am now officially a starving artist. I was laid off from the event company I worked for because George Bush was to busy choking on pretzels and turkey-bowling to do something about the economy.

That being said, if you or anyone you know in the Baltimore or DC Metro area are looking for illustrations/paintings/graphic design/web design/your house cleaned/ your laundry done/your dog walked etc, etc, etc. let me know. I’ll do it. For serious. I’m broke.

Also, I’ve posted some more hand-made stuff on Etsy, including several different sets of coasters!

Society of Illustrators Acceptance!

January 4th, 2009

I just found out that the cover I did for the Fall of the House of Usher has been accepted into the Society of Illustrators LA show and annual catalog! Thanks so much to Susan Doyle-Shed for submitting my work via RISD and to Jon Foster and my former classmates for the critique and suggestions to make it better! The show is going to be at Gallery Nucleus in LA from March 28 to April 3, so if you’re in the area… stop by and see what I’m sure will be a great show!

Here’s the piece that was accepted:

Edgar Allan Poe

December 23rd, 2008

This is my latest 3D illustration… it’s a portrait of Poe in celebration of his 200th birthday this coming January. Poe hung out here in Baltimore quite a bit so I thought he would be a good subject to do while I’m here…

Summed up Summer

December 7th, 2008

Big update! Tons of stuff has happened since April. First of all, I graduated from RISD with a BFA in Illustration. After a couple of months of bumming around Massachusetts, I moved to Baltimore and started freelancing.

My first job was for Delaware Today. It was a spot illustration for a short story about how the economy will be affecting Santa this year. You can see it with the article here, but here’s the image I came up with.

Second, I opened up an Etsy shop at http://sophytuttle.etsy.com/. I’m selling greeting cards, original illustrations, and prints so far, but I’m hoping to expand to sculptures eventually too. I’m also offering custom jobs… drawings, paintings, sculptures, pretty much anything…

Third! Through a bizarre string of coincidences I am now part of a chicken-themed show at Joe Squared on North Street in Baltimore. I wish I had a picture of my piece but it was a rush job (found out about the show on Wednesday and it opened on Thursday), so I didn’t have time to scan it. It’s a good show, and a pretty cool bar besides, so if you hate the show at least you can get drink as a consolation.

The last update I have is that I will be doing portfolio reviews at MICA tomorrow on behalf of RISD. We’ll see how that goes…
