A Helping Hand

MacMillian Pier // Provincetown, MA, USA // 20x6.5′ // 2024

'A Helping Hand' is inspired by the flamingo that was sighted all around Cape Cod in 2024, wandering from beach to beach. I imagine he's lost and maybe scared, blown off course and separated from his flock. He certainly sticks out here in the North.

His story made me think about how Provincetown is a place where those who are feeling lost or out of place can find community or even a new family. Inspired by this, I painted Mary Oliver’s ‘Wild Geese’ underneath the final design, as a reminder that...

“Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things."
