A Helping Hand

MacMillian Pier // Provincetown, MA, USA // 20x6.5′ // 2024

'A Helping Hand' is inspired by the flamingo that was sighted all around Cape Cod in 2024, wandering from beach to beach. I imagined him lost and scared, blown off course and separated from his flock.

His story made me think about how Provincetown is a place where those who are feeling lost or out of place, especially in the LGBTQ+ community, can find their flock. Inspired by this, I painted Mary Oliver’s poem ‘Wild Geese’ underneath the final design, as a reminder that...

“Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things."
